For example, in a 1739 case, Wu Shi, a widow whose husband died of illness, remained chaste for ten years after. When she was forced to remarry, she hung herself, essentially martyring herself for chastity. A widow and her in-laws decision to remarry could often be financially motivated; remaining chaste took an economic toll on the family and would only be realistic for widows from wealthy families. Charlotte Furth, when contextualizing Chinese medicine in history, characterized the female body was characterized as a sacrificial reproductive body that fulfilled the duties associated with chastity through its dedication to a specific labor in service of the family. Furth goes on to assert that physical pain was an integral element of physical female virtue. Certainly, this was the case with widow chastity, as some women saw suicide as the only way to remain virtuous after they were forced into remarriage. The act of foot-binding, then, could also be put into this category of physical pain. During the Qing Dynasty, while the chastity movement was at its height, the foot-binding movement was also pervasive; foot-binding had become part of a beauty ideal that women of all social and econom ic levels coveted. In her book Cinderellas Sisters: A Revisionist History of Footbinding, Dorothy Ko claims that those who had been frequently praised for the beauty of their feet may well have internalized this standard of beauty and been more than willing to help their daughters attain it as well. The concept of thrice following implied a life of chastity: a girls life was divided into three sections, where she followed her father before she was married, then her husband, and then her son if she became a widow. Therefore, to prepare for the next stage of their daughters lives, mothers began footbinding their daughters at a young age, wanting them to attract a good husband; the smaller and more crippled the feet, the more beautiful the woman. Husbands chose wives sometimes solely by looking at their feet, as a womans capabilities as a good wife could be tied to the size of her feet. Ko mentions a husband who criticized his wifes wastefulness by commenting on her feet, saying that keeping [her] around we would have no jacket and pants to wear; why, a pair of your shoes uses up three feet of cloth. For women, then, their social status and marriageability largely depended on this very superficial and visual aspect of their body. Women scrutinized other women for the way they walke d and the size of their feet. Women with ugly feet † specifically, women with poorly bound feet † were bullied and called names such as half-squeezed-foot and little-crooked-bone. Notably, women with natural and entirely unbound feet were not snubbed as much as women who tried to bind their feet. Again, this may have been because foot-binding had expanded to lower social levels; women who didnt bind their feet altogether may have been left out of the narrative, while women who were not as successful at foot-binding were seen as posers who wanted to join the elite. Ko asserts that the surface of female bodies especially the adorned bound foot acquired significance as social skin, a boundary between self and others as well as between social classes. By observing a womans foot, one could superficially lump her in with the group of the elite or with the poor. It is also important to acknowledge that the rise of foot-binding during the Ming and Qing dynasties may not have been a direct result of the rise of chastity Ko concedes that other factors may have contributed to the movement. Changes in the way that homes and other domestic spaces were constructed resulted in more permanent enclosed areas, furthering the culture of seclusion for women and keeping women in this private sphere. Furthermore, changes in domestic furniture, namely, the growing popularity of chairs and tables would have reduced the pressures on feet and allowed women to sit down more comfortably, with their legs hanging rather than on the ground. However, it would be inexhaustive to not consider the connections between foot-binding and preservation of chastity; the elite class of women who were most successful at foot-binding were also practicing chastity at the highest level. Foot-binding, then, as a very visual and physical indication of class and civility was a way for women to gauge another womans level of devotion to her sexual morality. Later in the Qing era, critics of the gender norms and sexual inequality included foot-binding in their criticisms. Yuan Mei, a well-known poet and scholar, not only encouraged casual interactions between the sexes but also explicitly condemned the suicides of rape victims, the custom of widow chastity, and even foot-binding as unnecessarily extreme expressions of virtue. Even if foot-binding was not a direct result of female chastity, scholars from this time viewed foot-binding as a symbol of chastity to some degree. By studying the legal codes as well as analyzing stories of women over time, it is evident that life and expectations for a woman in ancient China was shaped through more complex ways than just her gender. Simply claiming that female agency was restricted during this time would be inaccurate; even the definition of agency for women evolved over time and had distinct significance for women of different classes. The stories and torturous practices that these women endured certainly underscore the oppression of Chinese women for centuries. But when studying the lives of these women, it is just as important for us to fully contextualize them in the economic and social climate of their time and understand the differing class expectations that all contributed to the rise and lauding of female chastity.

To an ethnomusicologist the origins of the steel pan, as a percussion instrument will come as no surprise as bells rattles and drums have been used in African societies for communication, entertainment and worship from as early as â€Å"6000 B. C In Trinidad and Tobago African drums were used in churches, orchestras, dances and festivals. There are different types of drums such as the bougarabou, djembe, dun dun and talking drum. † (â€Å"Emancipation Day†, 8) In 1884 the beating of skin drums was prohibited in Trinidad as it was used as a method of accurate communication amongst slaves. This, simply forced the slaves to become more creative in there methods of communication, eventually leading to the beating of hollow bamboo stick and the tamboo-bamboo. The tamboo-bamboo are large hollow pieces of bamboo of varying sizes that are used to create tunes of varying sounds. After the emancipation of the slaves, the tamboo-bamboo progressed from a necessary method of communication to an alternative form of entertainment with accompanying, songs, dancing and celebrations. It was this step to multi-tonal percussion that was one of the largest progressions towards the steel pan as it is known today. Tamboo-bamboo bands were often accompanied by â€Å"non-traditional instruments like as scrap metal, metal containers, graters and dustbins† (Pan a short history,1). By the 1930’s these became the dominant component of Tamboo-bamboo bands. As metal became more readily available it gradually replaced bamboo. Metal playing musicians in these bands realised that raised sections of the instrument tended to make different sounds than flat sections of the instrument. During the World War II years there was a growing demand for oil and due to Trinidad’s large oil reserves, excess and discarded oil and chemical drums were plentiful. Through experimentation, luck and persistence by the unemployed and underprivileged youth came â€Å"the birth of steel pan, the only musical invention of the twentieth century. †( Pan a short history,1). It was discovered that by striking sections of the pan that had been warped by heat and mallet that one could achieve a variety of tones. According to tradition, a young man from Laventille, one of the most poverty stricken areas was the first to do this. Pan however; as an item was not invented by any person. It evolved and there are a number of people, including myself, who advanced it through certain stages of that evolution. (Elliott, 200) Some of these artists include ‘â€Å"Winston ‘Spree’ Simon is credited with creating the first ‘melody pan’†¦ Ellie Mannette is credited with being the first to wrap the playing sticks with rubber which softened the attack and produced a more refined tone (now called the hammer) Anthony Williams is credited with inventing the ‘spider web pan’ which was designed in a cycle of fourths and fifths. )† ( Pan a short history,2)â€Å"Today they are made using empty oil drums that are cut to varying depths depending on their role in the orchestra (bass, cello, guitar, ping-pong). The surface is then sunk about two inches and delicately seamed with a punch and hammer. A struck section will resound relative to its size and depth. The drum face is then exposed briefly to fire and doused with water or oil, which has the effect of retempering the steel and further insulating the notes. † (Sewell,1) In modern times, steel pan does not refer to a single instrument but rather a family of instruments that when played together in harmonies are referred to as â€Å"steel band†. Steel pan musicians are called pannists. The voices that compose the steel band are high tenor which ranges from D4 to F#6, low tenor which ranges from C4 to E6, double second pan uses two pans and ranges from F3 to B5, quadraphonic pan uses 4 pans and has an extensive pitch range, from B2 one octave below middle C to Bb5, guitar pan which ranges from one octave below middle C, to F#5 one octave above middle C, cello pan which uses a combination of 3 pans. One pan therefore contains the notes C, Eb, Gb and A; another pan contains C#, E, G and Bb; the third pan contains B, D, F and Ab, and the four pan bass which range is from G2, two octaves and a 4th below middle C, to D4 above middle C. Creating images of the heart using ultrasonic waves is known as echocar diography. The images of the heart are created using 2-dimensional, 3-dimensional or Doppler ultrasound. The test is routinely used in a clinical set up for screening, diagnosis, and management of various diseases of the heart. In the current medical era, echocardiography has become the primary imaging tool for the evaluation, diagnosis, assessment, and management of congenital and acquired cardiac disease in newborns, infants, children, and adolescents. The most ideal tool for assessment of cardiac problems is transthoracic echocardiography. The procedure is portable, efficacious and noninvasive and provides the detailed overview of the various anatomical, physiologic, and hemodynamic information of the heart. The various types of echocardiogram currently used are 2D echocardiogram, pediatric transesophageal echocardiogram, fetal echocardiogram, stress echocardiogram and intraoperative transesophageal echocardiogram. Pediatric echocardiography is unique when compared to adult echoc ardiography. There is a wide spectrum of diseases. Many of the cardiac conditions encountered are congenital.

Richard Wright's The Man Who Was Almost a Man The Man Who Was Almost a Man is a fictitious short story about an uneducated black boy's quest to become a man. Growing up in the early 1900's was a very hard task for most black people. The lack of education was one of the hardest hills they had to overcome to make it in a world dominated by whites. The story centers upon one 17-year boy who has very low self-esteem caused by his peers. He believes that owning a gun will gain him respect with others and thus make him a man. The title of this short story has several different ways of being interpreted because the time and atmosphere in which it was written. The short story was written in first person narrative, which gives a graphic account of the personality of the character Dave. The short story is also written in a dialect of an uneducated black boy which gives the reader the feel of what is was like to be that young man back in the early 1900's. The stories title The Man Who Was Almost a Man holds many different meanings to how Dave must have felt back in those times. Dave's struggle was man versus society in an era where his skin color meant more than his actions. He was unable to interact with the white society and was outcast by his peers because of his age. He believed at this time in his life that being a man was the more important than life itself. Buying a gun and learning to shoot was his solution to becoming a man. This was not the case though. The first time he fired the gun it numbed his hands and fell to the ground. He also shot Mr. Hawkin's mule, which he was unable to cover up. Now everyone would know what he had done which would give his peers a bad impression of him. He would not gain their respect, nor... ... a man.
